Letter from Year 1 Staff w/c 8th June

Date: 5th Jun 2020 @ 3:13pm

Dear Parents/Carers.

We hope you all had a lovely half term break and enjoyed the sunshine. We do enjoy hearing and seeing what you have been up to via our class emails - this can be school work or other activities and events. Remember to check the ‘Shout Outs!’ newsletter and blog added to the website each Monday.

Maths

We would like you to complete lessons for week 6 on Oak National Academy. This week focuses on using addition and subtraction skills to solve problems. There are several strategies that are shown on the video such as the part whole model, number lines and dienes (cubes). Let your child have a go with the different methods and choose the strategy they feel most confident with. Again if you have a tape measure and Lego bricks this will help when using the number line/dienes methods. For lesson 3, exploring different addition and subtraction statements, your child could make towers using 2 different coloured Lego bricks – this will help them to visualise the different number sentences. So for example: 8 + 6 = 14 If they make a tower of 8 in one colour, a tower of 6 using another colour and put it together  to create the whole tower – they can then write each number sentence:

8 + 6 = 14             6 + 8 = 14             14 = 8 + 6             14 = 6 + 8             14 – 8 = 6             14 – 6 = 8             14 - 8 = 6

Lesson 4 looks at solving addition and subtraction questions involving money. You could use 1p coins for this rather than the counters shown in the video and draw the tens frame grids for your child to practise the method shown.

We realise there are lots of different methods shown on the video, but what is most important is that your child can calculate the answers, using any given method. If they choose to use one method that they feel most confident with, that is fine. Please remember to email us if you need to ask any questions. They are pasted individually below in the order they should be completed.

Please remember to keep practising number bonds to 20 so that your child can recall these at speed. Your child could play the game below to reinforce this.

English

We would like you to complete the lessons for week 6 on Oak National Academy (each lesson has a link below in the order it should be completed.)

These lessons include phonics, spelling and this week we are looking at a poem called The Magic Wand. The children should be familiar with poetry and know that poems can have rhymes. The lessons progress through the week: starting with listening to a poem, identifying rhyming words, identifying onomatopoeia, planning a poem and finally writing a poem.
