Letter from year 1 staff w/c 11th May

Date: 7th May 2020 @ 4:11pm

Dear Parents/Carers.

We hope you have found this week’s work helpful. It’s been lovely seeing some of the fantastic work you have been doing! If you have sent something in to us, look out for the new ‘Shout Outs!’ newsletter and blog available from Monday, where you may make an appearance!

We hope you enjoyed reading the messages from all the school staff on the video created by Mr Norris. It is available on our website homepage: https://www.moldgreenprimary.co.uk/

Next week, we will try and contact you again by phone. As these calls are generally made from our individual homes, the display on your phone will say unknown or a private number. If we do not manage to speak to you, we will leave messages where possible. We will follow up with an email if we cannot make contact with you. You could send us an email if you want us to call you on a specific day or time and we will try our best to accommodate.

Here are the details of work for next week:

Maths

For next week we would like you to complete lessons for week 3. They are pasted individually below in the order they should be completed:

These lessons focus on reading, writing and knowing the value of each digit in a 2 digit number to 100. On the video the numbers are represented in different ways, using towers of bricks, straws and real life objects. Your child will be familiar with these representations as we have used these in class. However we have only worked with numbers up to 50, so far. The numbers 50-100 will be new learning for them. It is important that your child can recognise what number the representation is showing but also be able to practically make different numbers. I understand it is more difficult to have resources to use at home to do this. However if your child has lego bricks, they could make towers of ten with those and have individual bricks to represent the ones. They could then practically make different numbers which you give them. You could also use money for this – using 10p and 1p coins to represent different numbers. Your child could also draw pictures of different numbers – drawing sticks for the tens and dots for the ones. We have done this in class before. If you have a tape measure you could use this as a number line as shown in the video.

If you would like to reinforce and practise the place value of digits in numbers there is a shark game in the link, http://www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers/mobile/index.html which can be played on mobile devices.

English

For English this week, we would like you to complete the lessons for Week 3 (each lesson has a link below in the order it should be completed.)

These lessons include phonics, spelling and this week the area covered is character description, based on the story George and the Dragon. We have done character descriptions before so they will be familiar with this. The lessons progress through the week from reading the story, committing it to memory, identifying features of a character’s appearance, identifying features of a character’s personality and finally writing a character description.

Our school has a subscription to a handwriting programme called Letter-Join.  For details of how to login see last week’s letter. It is available on our Year 1 page of the school website https://www.moldgreenprimary.co.uk/class/year-1  on the Year 1 blog.
