Letter from year 1 group staff w/c 27th April

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 11:17am

Dear Parents/Carers.

We hope you are all well and staying safe.

Now we are beginning a new term we would like to set some weekly tasks for you to complete at home in order to support your child with their learning. Any work completed can be saved and handed in to the Year 1 team when we return to school.

Maths

For maths this week, we would like you to complete the 5 lessons for Week 1 on https://www.thenationalacademy/

This revisits work we have completed in class, comparing and measuring length. We would also like your child to practise counting forwards and backwards in steps of 2, 5 and 10. Again this is something we have looked at in class and an area which needs continued practise to become more confident. Your child could write the number sequences, circle them on a 100 square if you are able to print one at home and find objects in the house that they can group and count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. You could link this to money – your child could work out how much money there is in 2ps, 5ps and 10ps. If you would like something extra the lessons on https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize in maths Year 1, provide videos and activities to practise counting in different steps.

English

For English this week, we would like you to complete the 5 lessons for Week 1 on https://www.thenationalacademy/

These lessons include phonics, spelling and this week the area covered is instruction writing. We have looked at instructions before so they will already have some knowledge on this. The lessons progress through the week so you will need to start with Monday’s lesson. This is also where the sounds of the week are introduced and the spellings for this week.

Extra activities this week for English could be saying instructions for your child to follow, following a simple recipe or even allowing you child to give you some instructions to follow. There are also some short videos about instructions on BBC Bitesize, In English, Year 1, Types of text, non-fiction: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z7ssgk7/resources/1

There will be a new phonics programme of lessons being launched on Monday 27th April. Please see attached letter for details to access these lessons.

Please also try to read with your child regularly and record this in their reading record. For further reading resources, OxfordOwl have free ebooks for you to access and share at home: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page

Science and Art

As part of our science work, the children were looking at and naming different plants. This week on your daily walk or in your garden you could name and describe any flowers you see. Go on a daffodil hunt – how many times do you see daffodils on your walk? For art this week can you make a representation of a daffodil? You could draw a detailed sketch and colour or paint it. Or you could make a 3D model or collage.

The National Academy link also has 5 Geography lessons Week 1. Enjoy going through those lessons too!

These links are there for you should you wish to use them. Whilst they are important, we also feel that you should only complete tasks that work for you and your family. Activities should be fun and not be stressful for children or parents.  You and your family’s well-being are paramount to us.

We look forward to seeing all the fantastic work you do and remember to email us if you need any further help or advice.
