Letter from year 2 group staff w/c 27th April

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 11:19am

Dear Year 2 children, parents and carers,

We hope you are all keeping safe and staying at home as much as you can.  It’s a really strange time for us all – one day we will teach all about this in history lessons in schools and you will be the ones (when you’re all grown up!) that children talk to, to find out first-hand information! We are missing you lots (Mrs Williams is really sorry she never got a chance to say goodbye) but we’re really looking forward to when we can all be together again – we’re hoping you’re going to have lots to tell us about the interesting and exciting things you have been doing to keep yourselves busy!

On that note, the government have launched a new website with lessons for all children but with Year 2 specific lessons. It’s at www.thenational.academy/ and from now on we’ll be getting in touch with you weekly to let you know what lessons are on there that are appropriate for you to access to help with the lessons we are missing in school. Most of the lessons involve watching a video of a teacher and then you either do a little activity (you might need paper and something to write with) or a quiz to show what you’ve learned. At the moment there is no way for us to access scores of the quizzes you do but you could do screen grabs or take photos of your work and send us pictures if you want to!  The lessons are split in to subjects – English, Maths and Foundation, this includes history, geography, science, art and Spanish but not all every week! It would be great if you could do the English, Maths and Science lessons and anything extra would be a bonus – Mrs Williams particularly likes the art lesson!

For week 1 the lessons include:

English – Based on ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter.  All about writing instructions (we should be good at this as we’ve already done some in school) using imperative verbs (bossy words!) and adverbs (how something is done eg. quickly, slowly, cautiously, finally)

Maths – 2D and 3D shapes and their properties including faces, vertices and lines of symmetry.  It also teaches you about right angles in shapes – do you remember using a piece of A4 paper to test if shapes had right angles before Christmas?

Art – investigating colours. It says Year 1 but it is for Year 2 as well. It looks at the work of Any Goldsworthy.

Science – lessons about ‘Light and Dark’

History – lessons about the Shang Dynasty – a time in Chinese history

Spanish – how to count and say the alphabet in Spanish.

From Monday 27th April, there will be phonics lessons available too, from Greetland Academy – see attached flyer for how to access this at https://bit.ly/34KsiFS . These are primarily aimed at Reception and Year 1 children but could be useful for you too!

If you want to get in touch to share pictures of your work or to tell us what you’ve been up to we would love to hear from you.  The email address for 2W that is on the school website, unfortunately, does not work as it was not set up on her laptop (these were created later in the last week) so to contact Mrs Williams you can either email the 2M address or the school office and it will be forwarded.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all soon but until then stay safe and we will send you weekly emails with updates of what learning is on the Oak National Academy that you can have a try at!

Love from,

Mrs Williams and Miss March
